What to Know Before You Go

Visa & Entry
A $21 ESTA is required for Visa Waiver Program citizens, applied online at least 72 hours before departure. Citizens outside the Visa Waiver Program need a B1/B2 visa — expect processing to span weeks. Apply early — tournament-period demand will be very high.
For stays under 180 days no visa is needed for most passports. On arrival you're issued an FMM tourist permit, or you can apply for it online beforehand. Going to matches in both Mexico and the US requires separate entry authorisation per country.
For visa-exempt nationals an eTA is mandatory ($7 CAD, online process). A full visa, where required, should be filed for early. Turnaround is generally fast but can lag around major events. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
USD is the currency. Credit and debit cards are taken pretty much everywhere. Tipping is the norm: 18-20% in restaurants, $1-2 per drink in bars. Plan on $15-25 per meal at casual restaurants and $8-15 for fast food. Stadium concessions cost noticeably more.
The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are commonly accepted near tourist sites, though peso payments get better rates. 10-15% is the customary tip. Local-restaurant meals run $5-10, which makes Mexico the most affordable host country. ATMs are widely available.
Currency: Canadian Dollar (CAD). Cards are accepted everywhere, contactless included. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Costs sit near US levels: budget $15-25 per meal. Be aware that Canadian shelf prices are pre-tax, meaning your final bill runs 13-15% over what the menu shows.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions differ significantly across host cities. The south is hot and humid: Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C. The West Coast stays milder and drier: LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C. The East Coast runs warm and humid: New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C. For outdoor stadiums: sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated.
The wet season begins in June. Because Mexico City is at 2,200m, daytime tops out near 25°C and evenings cool down hard. Bring layers plus a rain jacket. Temperatures in Guadalajara and Monterrey climb to 30-33°C with more humidity. Thunderstorms in the afternoon are routine but typically short-lived.
Some of the best weather Canada offers. In Toronto, expect about 26°C with occasional humid spells. Vancouver averages 22°C, sees up to 16-hour days, and gets little rainfall. Both cities offer comfortable conditions for outdoor events. Pack light layers for evening match times.
Practical Info
A/B-style plugs at 120V. The primary language is English. Uber and Lyft are available in every host city. Free WiFi is broadly available at hotels, cafes, and airports. Grab an eSIM or prepaid SIM on arrival for mobile data. Public-transit quality differs widely — excellent in New York, limited in Dallas and Houston.
Type A/B sockets, 127V (matching US). Spanish is the main language but tourist areas and stadium zones see plenty of English. Uber and DiDi run smoothly in all three host cities. Pick up a local SIM (Telcel or AT&T Mexico) at the airport for cheap data and calls.
Power: Type A/B at 120V (US-compatible). Toronto is English; Vancouver bilingual English/French. Ride-hailing via Uber runs in both cities. Transit is dependable — Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both reach the stadiums. Visitor-friendly: skip pricey Canadian plans and use an eSIM or prepaid SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which European hub is cheapest for connecting from Cyprus?

It varies by US host city. Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich tends to win on direct pricing to New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington and the US Midwest. KLM via Amsterdam is competitive on the same routes with better economy-comfort seat width. Turkish via Istanbul is cheapest for US West Coast and Canadian destinations when you are willing to accept a longer routing. Emirates via Dubai and Qatar via Doha are the leisure-class options — often cheaper than European connections for Miami and Los Angeles, with better food and seat pitch, but the routing adds 3 to 4 hours each way. Compare all three before booking.

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Cyprus?

December 2025 through February 2026 is the cleanest EUR window. Two-stop itineraries from LCA and PFO have narrow inventory in the cheapest fare buckets, so booking early is essential — once one of the two flights sells out of cheap seats, the whole itinerary reprices. For group-stage matches, lock fares by January. For knockout rounds through the 19 July final, December 2025 is safer because premium-cabin upgrades in the European hubs steal economy inventory on flights into Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Istanbul during late-June and July peaks.

Do Cypriot citizens need a visa for the USA, Mexico or Canada?

No full visa. For the USA, Cypriot passport holders qualify for ESTA (USD 21, valid 2 years). Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before travel — and watch your transit stops; if you transit a non-Visa-Waiver country on the way to the USA, that is fine, but if you have recently travelled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, North Korea or Cuba since March 2011, your ESTA application may be denied and you would need a full B1/B2 visa. For Canada, apply for eTA (CAD 7, valid 5 years). For Mexico, no pre-arrival authorisation needed.

Are there any direct flights from Cyprus to North America?

As of 2026, no. Cyprus Airways does not operate long-haul, and no other carrier currently schedules direct Larnaca-North America or Paphos-North America service. Every itinerary routes through a European or Middle Eastern hub. Seasonal charter service to Toronto and New York has occasionally been announced by Greek-Cypriot diaspora operators but never delivered reliably. Assume two-stop routing: LCA or PFO to a hub, then long-haul to your host city.

Can I add a European stopover to my World Cup trip?

Absolutely — and for two-stop itineraries from Cyprus it often costs nothing extra. Lufthansa and Austrian allow free stopovers in Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna for up to 24 hours without adding to airfare, longer stopovers are sometimes bookable as separate open-jaws for a small fee. TAP via Lisbon and Iberia via Madrid offer explicit stopover programmes. For Greek-Cypriot fans wanting to visit family in Athens or Thessaloniki, routing via Athens on Aegean adds almost nothing to the fare and lets you split the journey comfortably. Ask for a stopover at the booking stage; most online engines do not surface the option automatically.

What happens if my first flight from Cyprus misconnects in Europe?

Under EU261, your full ticket — including the transatlantic leg — is protected as long as both legs are on the same booking and the delay was not caused by extraordinary circumstances. Lufthansa, KLM, Turkish and Aegean will rebook you on the next available flight and cover meals and hotels for overnight delays. Two-ticket itineraries (cheap Cyprus-to-Europe leg booked separately from the long-haul leg) lose this protection entirely — a missed connection becomes your problem. For World Cup travel, a single through-ticket is strongly recommended despite the modestly higher price.

Do I need travel insurance beyond Cypriot GeSY coverage?

Yes. GeSY (General Healthcare System) does not cover medical costs outside the EU/EEA, and a US emergency-room visit can cost EUR 20,000 or more. Buy a tournament-length travel medical policy with at least EUR 300,000 cover (500,000 preferred for USA), plus trip cancellation, baggage and connection-failure coverage. Allianz Assistance, AIG and Universal Life all sell Cyprus-compatible policies from EUR 40 to 120. Confirm USA is explicitly covered and that the policy includes trip delay compensation — two-stop itineraries have more failure points than direct flights, so this matters more for Cypriot travellers.
